Counselor’s Corner - January 9, 2023
Dear Teacher,
As a history teacher at Letcher County Central High School in Whitesburg, Kentucky, educator Winston Lee administered his regular February exams. For 11th graders, their World War II test was comprehensive, covering the content they'd covered in the new semester. However, these test results were different than any other that Winston had seen in his 12 years of teaching. As he graded the stack of exams, Mr. Lee noticed a note scrawled at the bottom of a test of a straight A+ student. The note read: "If you could, can you give my bonus points to whoever scores the lowest?" Following the student's instructions, Lee awarded the five additional points to a different student, lifting her to a passing grade. As a result, the student who gave away his points settled for a 94% instead of the potential 99%, a feat that garnered 76,0000 Facebook likes and a Good Morning America feature as an acknowledgement of his self-sacrifice. His bonus brought big payoff!
And you, educator, with you not-so-large paycheck and your depleted energy reserves? I see you and all that you so self-sacrificially share. Whether it's your lunch or your time, you are always looking for the kid who needs more. You settle for less to ensure that the students in your classroom are lifted. You pour into them, pay more attention to them, pray for them, and partner on behalf of them. You give you bonus-time reserves, bonus-thought process, bonus-skill level, bonus-love quotient (even if it's just the little bit you have) to make a big difference in their lives. Your bonus brings big payoff!
"Do good to them. Let them use your things and do not expect something back. Your reward will be much."

Grateful for your sacrifice,
