Counselor’s Corner - Issue 46

Dear Way-Makers,

It happened this week in the midst of threatening winter storm warnings promising Lake-effect snow and 45-mile an hour winds. The flakes were falling fast and stung my eyes as I led the way down a winding walkway toward the promise of the heated building up ahead.  With children on my heels, I advised them to "step where I step" in order to safely navigate the icy sidewalk. Leading the line, I cautiously navigated the way, ensuring the safety of my precious followers.

Then it happened, in a flurries-flash I hit an icy patch and my feet went out from underneath me.  I hit the cold concrete with the thud of tail to turf impact.  Rolling over onto my stomach, I knelt, and gathered my scattered belongings and whatever remained of my pride.  "Mommy, are you okay?" asked my little girls with concern in their voices.  "I'm fine," I responded reassuringly, clamoring to my unsteady feet.  And I really was fine.  I had successfully saved them from injury by paving the way through uncharted territory.

And I hope you are fine, too.  You've successfully navigated the treacherous way through nearly 2 years of a pandemic, hesitantly taking next steps and walking blindly through each challenge.  And yet, as state mask mandates lift for schools and children are left standing and unscathed, I thank you for your heroic efforts.  For the times you walked out ahead as leaders in Adventist education, for the times you paved the way for student safety, and yes, for the times you fell into depression and got back up.  Thank you for your resiliency, your sacrifice, and your ministry.

With gratitude (and a bruised rear),
Mindy
