Counselor’s Corner - September 14, 2023 Issue

Dear Teacher,

One of my all-time favorite movie scenes is from the "The Help," where the main actress Octabia Spencer as maid Abilene Clark pours into the little one she nannies.  In a key moment, there in the pink nursery, an affirmation that the child doesn't get anywhere else: "You is kind, you is smart, you is important." There in the rocking chair, that memorable love and nurturing is just what the little girl needs to know her value, worth, and potential.

And you, teacher, there in your classroom, pour daily affirmations into your students, as well.  You greet students in the morning with an "I'm so glad you're here!"  You kneel next to the kid trying to process information and whisper, "See?  You've got this thing!" You intervene on the playground to address a poor choice and say, "I know you can do better.  You are such a leader!" Every day you pour affirmation into the kiddos you teach.

But, are you as good about giving yourself daily affirmations? Often, we're our own worst critics and struggle to see our worth in the midst of overwhelm, depression, and busyness.  So, please, teacher, allow me to do it for you.

Your students will learn more from who you are than what you teach.

You are the teacher you needed when you were younger.

Just like we remember our favorite teachers, one day your future students will have you in mind.

To the world you may be just a teacher, but to your students you are a hero.

In case no one told you today, you are so appreciated and valued.

Affirming you in words and holding you in prayer,
