“The Champion”
Dear Teacher,
Today, while conducting an individual session with a student, I considered how he had recently been transplanted to a new city. Having endured all the changes that come with a move -- new house, new school, new church, new friends -- I wondered if he had enough outside-of-home support. So I asked, "Which grown-ups in your new world do you consider to be your cheerleaders?"
He immediately responded with a confident answer. "My new cheerleaders are my homeroom teacher and my assistant principal." He went on to describe how his favorite educator had left her daughter's graduation in order to be on time for his baptism. Her attendance to his significant life event powerfully embodied this quote by educator Rita Pierson:
"Every child deserves a champion: An adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection, and insists they become the best they can possibly be."
And you, Teacher, there in your classroom are a champion for each of your students. You go to their weekend birthday parties with thoughtful child-centered gifts. You show up to their music recitals and give a standing ovation. You attend their swim meet and holler from the stands. You celebrate each student proudly and boldly.
But you also champion in the subtle, soft ways, as well. You put a quiet hand on a student's shoulder to bring them back to attention. You stock extra snacks for the kid who only brings a sandwich. You respond to their negative self-talk with sincere affirmations of encouragement. With your connection, you "insist they become the best they can possibly be."
Thank you, dear Teacher! You are appreciated!
Proudly, boldly, subtly, and softly championing you,
Mindy
