Counselor’s Corner - December 12, 2022

Dear Teacher,

Known as the "Silent Rocco," the modern mime artist was dedicated to the art of silent meme since early childhood. Influenced by his love for 90's robot dance, Rocco created his first public mime sketch at the age of 14, which led him to countless other performances including as a cast member on TV shows and a finalist of "Italia's Got Talent."  His international viral success focuses around him being controlled by common objects such as dogs, lights, and imaginary walls.  Simple tasks like washing the dishes become highly complex when the pan has a "mind of its own."  However, Silent Rocco reassures viewers that "no pots were injured in the making of this video."

As I watched the pantomime content creator being bossed around by his own pants or a couch cushion, I thought about how easily we're bossed around as educators during the holiday season.  Especially this time of year, we likely feel out of control and that our school calendar, teacher planner, and Christmas parties are taking charge.  Our own schedule, classroom, and to-do lists take on lives of their own and can make us feel crazy.  While it's unlikely that "any students are injured in the making of the holidays," it could be that YOU give so much that your resiliency is injured.  To prevent that from happening, be sure you're intentional to slow down (use these 10 Teacher Tips for Slowing Down), and take back control of things that really matter. By reprioritizing, you can ensure that you continue to "wait [be quiet before] and trust the Lord.  Don't be upset [worried; angry] (Psalm 37:7, Expanded Bible).

Praying for quiet amidst the "Christmas" storm,
