Counselor’s Corner - March 28, 2023
Dear Teacher,
I can remember the first time I fired a gun. I was 25 and a newlywed. Intent on protecting his new wife, my husband took me to a shooting range for self-defense practice. There in the booth, with popping sounds all around, I aimed at the target and pulled the trigger. Fast as a bullet, tears streamed down my face at the realization of the power of the weapon in my hand.
And with yesterday's Covenant School shooting, tears are streaming across the nation. As you, teacher, there in your classroom, navigate questions by parents and students in regards to your school's safety, keep the following mental health keys in mind:
Listen to student fears and concerns without defaulting to a different subject. Part of their processing will occur when they're able to express and share they're feelings with other students.
Allow for open conversation around the event and share as much information as is developmentally appropriate.
Assure students that your school is safe. Identify the safety persuasions and procedures that are in place that ensure their safety.
Reassure students that the world is a good place to be, despite terrible events. Use your Christian worldview perspective to discuss sin and suffering, as well as salvation.
Come alongside each student using your teacher rapport. Notice unusual behavior and reactions that may indicate that the student is struggling to process the event.
As you work to unpack the violence against this small Christian school, consider using the following lesson plans to make it easier on you:
And teacher, for every deadly shot is a daily shot you have at making a powerful impact in the lives of your students.
Shooting up prayers for you,
