Counselor’s Corner - May 1 Issue

Dear Real-Life Servant Leaders,

You may have heard of Koko, the gorilla who could speak about 1000 words in Sign Language, and understand about 2000 in English. What you may not know, however, is that Koko was an avid Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood fan. She watched his show regularly, soaking in his actions, his words, and his humility. Through sign-language, Koko would indicate how much she loved Mr. Rogers and his neighborhood.

Finally, when Fred Rogers took a trip out to meet Koko, she had her chance! Not only would she be a star for his show, but she would be able to be face-to-face with her long-time hero! Barely able to contain her excitement, the ape lumbered up to this pastor and child teacher and immediately wrapped her arms around him in a gorilla-embrace him! Once the love-fest had ended, Koko did a very surprising thing. She did what she’d always seen him do onscreen: Bent down and proceeded to take his shoes off. She wanted to bless Fred with an act of servant leadership.

Koko and Fred's story makes me think of how student eyes watch your words, moves, and actions moment-by-moment, day-by-day. Who you are is being soaked up by the students you teach. Your example of servant leadership is one that someday could come back to you as they bless you in their actions of serving you!

Thanks for daily mentoring students!
Mindy
